Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team suffered a setback earlier today against the Bearcats of Baruch College, in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match, by a 3-2 score at Kingsborough Community College Field.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 0-5 overall on the season, 0-2 in the CUNYAC; while the Bearcats even their overall record to 4-4 on the year and improve to 2-0 in league play.
Brooklyn set the tone early in the match as sophomore
Pajtim Gjonbalaj put the Bulldogs on the board in the 9th minute, beating the goalkeeper with a header off of a previously deflected shot.
The Bulldogs would maintain their 1-0 lead the rest of the opening half, as Brooklyn was able to keep Baruch off the scoreboard with its stellar defensive play.
The Bearcats would finally breakthrough the Bulldogs backfield in the 55th minute, as Vincent Cruz was in the right place at the right time to knock in a rebound on shot that hit off the crossbar for the equalizer.
Baruch would later capitalize on a pair of Brooklyn fouls, as Alvaro Velazquez (63rd minute) and Akil George (86th minute) were each able to find the back of the net on the free kick opportunity.
George's goal would be the eventual game-winner, as Brooklyn senior
Igor Kozlov was able to beat the keeper with the help from sophomore Peterson Petit Frere to make it a 3-2 ballgame in the 87th minute. However, that's as close as the Bulldogs would get as their comeback attempt would fall just short as time expired.
For the game, Brooklyn held the shooting edge 23-19. The match featured physical play throughout, as the Bulldogs were whistled for 17 fouls in the game, while Baruch was called for 13 infractions.
Michael Murphy recorded 10 saves in net for the Bearcats in the win, while his counterpart from Brooklyn, sophomore
Stamatis Boundouris registered nine saves in the loss.
The Bulldogs will look to get into the win column this Saturday, September 24th, as Brooklyn will travel to Jamaica, NY to take on conference rival York College. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
