Women's Tennis Edges Farmingdale, 5-4, In Thrilling Non-Conference Match

Brooklyn, NY---With the match tied at four all, team captain sophomore Maria Sanz needed a third set tiebreaker to win her #3 singles match, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9); giving the Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team its 5-4 victory over the visiting Rams of Farmingdale State College on Thursday evening at the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus.

The win brings the Bulldogs record to 4-1, while the Rams, who were previously undefeated, fall to 4-1 on the season. The victory also extends Brooklyn's winning streak to three in a row.

Freshman Yuliya Orkis was dominant once again taking home victories in both doubles and singles play. At the start of the match, Orkis teamed up with sophomore Liana Rivkin at #1 doubles to edge out the duo of Jessica Sickles and Kristina Rossano, 9-7. Orkis later downed Sickles in #1 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Janice Shen, playing in her first career match for BC, defeated her opponent Liliya Dyakiv, 6-0, 6-4, at #4 singles. Sophomore Gianna Gelosi was also victorious in singles play, downing Alex Lebrun at #6 singles, 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm extremely proud of this win," said Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla. "We were resilient against a tough Farmingdale team, and the win will definitely provide momentum going into tomorrow's conference match against York.”

Brooklyn will take on City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival York College tomorrow, Friday September 23rd. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start at the Roosevelt Courts.
