Box Score

Flushing, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team continued its solid play on the season, as the Bulldogs defeated the Bearcats of Baruch College, 8-1, in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match earlier today at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.

With the win, Brooklyn improves to 5-1 overall on the year and a perfect 3-0 in the CUNYAC; while Baruch falls to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The win also extends the Bulldogs' win streak to four straight matches.

"During this win streak, we've displayed a tremendous show of tennis," said head coach Ahmad Odetalla. "We are hitting and moving around the court with confidence and that confidence was the key to our victory tonight."

That confidence showed early on, as the Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead after doubles play. The team of freshman Yuliya Orkis and sophomore Liana Rivkin defeated the duo of Anna Komar and Amanda Naraine, 8-0, at number one doubles. Junior Diana Rafailova and sophomore Maria Sanz took home number 2 doubles, 8-3, over Alina Bero and Lisa Kurner; while senior Janice Shen and sophomore Gianna Gelosi beat Marianna Kogan and Barbara Lucas at number three doubles, 8-2.

Later on in singles play, Orkis, the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, took home her second victory of the day, defeating Komar at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0; while Rivkin defeated Naraine in number two singles, 6-1, 6-1. Shen and Rafailova also won their singles matches; as Shen got the best of Bero, 6-0, 6-1, at number three singles, while Rafailova beat Kurner, 6-4, 6-3 at number five singles.

Sophomore Norma Lynn Chabbott had the match of the day at number six singles. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Chabbott bounced back to take the second set, 6-1, forcing a deciding third set. Chabbott would finish her comeback attempt winning the third set tiebreaker, 10-3, giving Brooklyn the final 8-1 win.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, September 28th, as Brooklyn will play host to non-conference rival Purchase College at the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus. Start time for the match is slated for a 4:30 pm start time.
