Women’s Tennis Edged Out by Purchase, 5-4

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season earlier today, as the Bulldogs dropped a tough luck decision to the visiting Panthers of Purchase College by a slim 5-4 margin in a non-conference tilt. With the loss, BC moves to 5-2 overall on the season, while Purchase improves to 3-2 overall on the year.

Despite the loss, freshman Yuliya Orkis, the reigning City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Rookie of the Week, continued her stellar play on the season taking home victories at number 1 doubles and number 1 singles.

Teaming up with senior Janice Shen, the Brooklyn duo defeated the pairing of Gabriella Marden and Moriah Ormsby, 8-5. Orkis also downed Marden in singles play, 6-0, 6-2.

Shen was also victorious in her singles match defeating her opponent Ashley Bernhardt at number 4 singles. After dropping the opening set, 7-5, Shen bounced back to take the second set by a similar 7-5 score to force the decisive third set. Shen would eventually outlast Berhardt in the final set, 6-3, to take the match.

Sophomore Gianna Gelosi accounted for the final BC point, winning at number 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Emily Bishop.

Purchase was victorious in number 2 and 3 doubles, as well as number 2, 3 and 5 singles flights to win the match. Number 2 doubles featured a back-and-fourth match, as Melissa Siller and Bernhardt got the best of freshman Katherine Torbov and sophomroe Maria Sanz, 8-6. The Panthers also had to battle to take home the number 2 singles flight, as Ormsby outplayed Torbov, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

“Although we did some good things, we were not consistent enough to beat Purchase tonight,” said head coach Ahmad Odetalla. “We have to recover from this loss quickly and play better against Lehman on Saturday.”

The Bulldogs will return to the courts this Saturday, October 1st, as Brooklyn will travel to the Bronx, NY to take on the Lehman College Lightning in a CUNYAC match. Start time is slated for 12:00 pm.
