Men’s Soccer Drops Nail Biter in Season Opener

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team started the 2011 season with a tough luck loss, as the Bulldogs dropped a double overtime thriller to the Rams of Farmingdale State University, 1-0, on a rainy Wednesday afternoon earlier today at Kingsborough CC. With the loss, BC opens the year at 0-1; while Farmingdale improves to an even 1-1 on the season.

The game would go scoreless until the second overtime, as senior Tyler Balzer notched the golden goal for the Rams in the 103rd minute. Balzer found the back of the net after penetrating the Bulldogs defense, which allowed the forward to get past the diving keeper.

The first half set the tone for the rest of the game, which featured a physical match throughout, as each team was whistled for seven fouls apiece. In total, there were 28 fouls committed, to go along with eight yellow cards.

Freshman goalkeeper Michael Valverde earned the shutout victory for Farmingdale posting 10 saves on the day, while his counterpart, sophomore Stamatis Boundouris was equally formidable recording six saves.

“We faced a well-organized Farmingdale team today,” said head coach Rawle Hensford. “I am very proud of the way our team performed despite the loss. We defended as a team, were very dynamic in our attack and were a bit unfortunate to give up the late goal. We can hold our heads high, take the positives from the game and look to build on this performance.”

Brooklyn will be back in action this Sunday, September 11th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Mahwah, NJ to take on the Roadrunners of Ramapo College in a non-conference match at 1:00 pm.
