Men’s Basketball Falls to CSI in CUNYAC South Battle

Staten Island, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team fell to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, 72-58, in a fight for first place in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) South Division, earlier today at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the CUNYAC, while the Dolphins improve to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

The first half was controlled by CSI as the Dolphins led from the opening tip until the halftime buzzer. CSI would lead by as many as nine on a number of occasions before taking a slim two point advantage, 33-31, heading into the locker room.

After a jumper from Staten Island's Bloochy Magloire opened the scoring in the second half, Brooklyn's Amil John recorded back-to-back layups to tie the game at 35-35 for the first time in the ballgame at the 18:54 mark. The Bulldogs would later take their first lead of the game, 37-35, with 17:22 left in the game on a layup from senior guard Tyshawn Russell.

Following another layup from Russell that tied the game for the fifth time at 53 all with 8:42 remaining, the Dolphins pushed out to a 14-2 run to take control of the game and build a double digit lead for the first time in the game, 67-55, with 3:01 left before the final buzzer.

CSI would lead by double figures the rest of the way as the Dolphins would take the eventual 72-58 victory.

Staten Island controlled the glass out-rebounding Brooklyn 49-31. The Dolphins were able to pull out the win in the end despite being forced into 21 turnovers in the game.

Russell and junior forward Kavon Baker led Brooklyn with game-highs in points with 14 each. John was the third BC player in double figures with 13 points, while also registering a game-high five steals. Juniors Keiran Halton and Filipp Bochkov each grabbed six rebounds apiece, while Halton also added eight points.

CSI had a balanced scoring attack with six players in double figures, including all five starters. Jordan Young recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Javon Cox also registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Lameik Black also tied for the team-lead in points with 12, to go with eight rebounds while coming off the bench. Dale Taranto, TJ Tibbs and Magloire all finished the afternoon with 10 points each.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 36.5% (23-63) from the field, while hitting just 2-for-11 (18.2%) from three. The Bulldogs also struggled from the line going 10-for-18 (55.6%).

Staten Island shot 49.2% (30-61) from the field, while converting on just 25.0% (4-16) from beyond the arc. The Dolphins went 8-for-12 (66.7%) from the charity stripe.

Brooklyn returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 11th, as the Bulldogs will play host to borough rival St. Joseph's College – Brooklyn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the West Quad Center.
