Staten Island, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team suffered its first regular season City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) loss since October 17, 2010 this afternoon, as the Bulldogs dropped a 5-3 decision to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island at the CSI Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 8-3 overall on the season and 6-1 in the CUNYAC; while the Dolphins improve to 7-4 overall on the year and 5-1 in league play.
It was these same Dolphins who last defeated the Bulldogs in the regular season back on October 17, 2010 by a 6-3 margin.
The match began with doubles play, as the BC would jump out to 2-1 lead taking two of the three doubles flights.
The tandem of
Yuliya Orkis and
Liana Rivkin made quick work of the duo of Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and Ilona Stoyko, 8-1, at #1 doubles; while the pairing of
Maria Sanz and
Gianna Gelosi edged out the team of Jean Baak and Madiha Mulla, 9-7, at #2 doubles.
Orkis, the reigning CUNYAC Player of the Week and Scholar-Athlete of the Month for September, continued her dominant play, as she cruised past Bragerton-Nasert, 6-0, 6-0, at #1 singles.
The win at #1 singles would be the lone singles win for BC on the day, as the Dolphins stormed back to take victories at the #2, #3, #4 and #5 singles positions, en route to their 5-3 match win. #6 singles would go unfinished.
Brooklyn will be back on the courts on Friday, October 12th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Jamaica, NY to take on the Cardinals of York College in the final CUNYAC regular season match of the year for BC. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start time.
