Women’s Soccer Tops St. Joe’s (BK) on Golden Goal

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- Brooklyn College freshman midfielder Sayla Flores recorded the golden goal in the second overtime period to lift the BC Women's Soccer team over borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 2-1, this afternoon at BC Field. The Bulldogs now move to 4-4-1 overall on the season, while the Bears drop to 2-3-2 overall on the year.

This was the second meeting of the season between the two schools, as they played to a scoreless tie earlier in the year back on September 13th.

The start of today's game featured much of the same as the first meeting, as both defenses and goalkeepers halted any offensive threats.

The Bears would be the first to break through, as Pam Chernyakhovsky passed to an open Cynthia Gambino, who found the back of the net in the 31st minute, to put St. Joe's (BK) up on the scoreboard.

The Bears would hold onto their lead throughout the rest of the period to head into the halftime break up 1-0.

The second half featured a much different game, as the Bulldogs pushed the offensive tempo from the start. BC would eventually find the equalizer, as sophomore tri-captain Shani Abrahams notched her ninth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 64th minute of play.

Brooklyn would continue to control the offensive end of the field; however, they would be denied the go ahead goal in regulation as the game headed into overtime.

Following a scoreless first overtime period, the game would head into a second overtime period, setting up Flores' game-winner. In the 105th minute, Flores dodged the Bears defense and riffled a shot that rattled off the goaltenders hands and into the net to give the Bulldogs the double overtime victory.

For the game, BC outshot St. Joe's (BK) 22-6 and also held the corner kick advantage 7-0.

Junior Karolina Gorna earned the win in net for BC, allowing one goal to go along with three saves; while her counterpart Nicole Farinella took the loss allowing two goals, to go along with an outstanding 12 saves.

Brooklyn will be back on the pitch this Saturday, October 13th, as the Bulldogs will play host the Beavers of The City College of New York (CCNY). The match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start time.
