Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team finished the 2012 regular season with a 9-3 overall record, including a 7-1 mark in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). The Bulldogs tied for first place in the conference and received the #2 seed for the upcoming CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women's Tennis Championships following the tiebreaker.
BC will play host to the #7 seeded Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice (2-10-1, 2-6 CUNYAC) in the Quarterfinals Round today, Wednesday, October 17th at the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus at 4:00 pm.
Head Coach
Ahmad Odetalla will look towards sophomore
Yuliya Orkis to once again guide the Bulldogs to another deep run in the conference tournament this year. Orkis, the 2011 CUNYAC Player of the Year, played an instrumental part in helping BC, the #1 seed, make an appearance in the championship final a year ago, falling to Hunter College.
Orkis posted a perfect 10-0 record at #1 singles this season, to go along with an 8-0 mark at #1 doubles. Orkis had the most success with partner junior
Liana Rivkin, as the duo posted a 4-0 mark.
Along with Orkis, senior
Maria Sanz and junior
Gianna Gelosi, CUNYAC All-Stars a season go, will again play major roles in Brooklyn's quest to make a run at the conference crown. Sanz posted an 8-3 record in singles play this season, including an unblemished 5-0 mark at #3 singles, to go along with a 7-4 record in doubles play. Gelosi went 7-2 this season in singles play and 6-2 in doubles. Sanz and Gelosi paired up to post a 3-0 mark at #2 doubles.
Juniors
Olayinka Sarayi and
Norma Lynn Chabbott will also look to make major contributions to the Bulldogs championship aspirations.
If BC gets past John Jay, the Bulldogs will advance to the semifinals on Friday, October 19th, where the winner between #3 College of Staten Island and #6 Lehman College will await. If Brooklyn gets past the semifinals, they will play in the championship final on Sunday, October 21st. The semifinals and final will both be held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY AT 1:00 pm.
