Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams dropped their respective season openers tonight against the Bearcats of Baruch College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) dual meet at the West Quad Center Pool. The Women dropped a 131-59 decision, while the Men lost 126-86.
Both Brooklyn teams start the season at 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the CUNYAC, while both Baruch teams improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
On the women's side, the Bearcats took home first place in nine of the 13 events en route to their win.
For Brooklyn, junior
Megan Pendergast took first place in the 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 6:25.30. Classmate
Valentina Monroy also had a strong night taking second place in the 100-Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:13.14 and also earning third place in the 200-Yard IM with a time of 2:38.89. Another junior,
Stephanie Caravello took first place in the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:35.87. Sophomore
Angela Redekop came in third place in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 16:16.12.
Pendergast was also a part of the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team, which included Redekop,
Patricia Velloza and junior
Jacqueline Szpunt, that took top honors with a time of 2:11.33.
Coming in the 200-Yard Medley Relay to start off the meet, the foursome of Caravello, Pengergast, Monroy and Velloza took home second place with a time of 2:17.14.
On the men's side the Bearcats also took nine first place finishes to lead the visitors to victory.
The Bulldogs were led by diver senior
Antonio Gaspar, who took home first place honors in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives. Coming in the 1-Meter Dive, Gaspar scored a 121.25 and later scored a 139.90 in the 3-Meter Dive.
Another key performer included first year member freshman
Terry Tsui who came in first place in the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:18.94. The Bulldogs would also take second and third place in the 100-Breast, as junior
Brian Clarke posted a time of 1:21.50, followed by classmate
Wilson Lee with a time of 1:24.38.
Senior
James Marty took third place in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 13:34.54 and
Christopher Piechocki, another first year member, who took third in both the 200-Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:06.45 and the 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 56.00. Another first year member, freshman
Emil Isaakov also took home a third place finish in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 26.26, as well as a third place finish in the 100-Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:04.10.
Freshman
Kevin Barros took third in the 100-Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:16.75.
The team of Barros, Clarke, Isaakov and
Brian Fay took first second place in the 200-Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:04.47, while the team of Marty, Fay, Piechocki and
Fong Zeng took first in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:45.29.
