Women’s Basketball Clinches #1 Seed In CUNYAC Championships With 72-42 Win Over York

Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team cruised past the Cardinals of York College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) South Division matchup earlier tonight by a score of 72-42.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 17-6 overall and 10-0 in conference play and have clinched the #1 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Championships; while the Cardinals fall to 3-19 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Brooklyn led from the opening tip and never looked back as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 9-0 advantage to start the game, en route to taking a 33-19 lead into the halftime break. The Bulldogs shot 40.0% (14-35) from the field, including going 5-for-12 (41.7%) from three in the first period.

BC would continue to lead by double figures throughout the second half, as the Cardinals would be unable to recover from its first half deficit.

Leading the way to the Brooklyn victory was senior guard Lauren Plagainos who led all scorers with a game-high 20 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, including going 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. Junior guard Charnelle Saint Laurent added 11 points, while freshman guard Nicole Francomano dished out a game-best nine assists, to go along with nine points.

Junior center Tiffany Thompson and senior forward Melissa St. Louis each grabbed eight rebounds, as BC out-rebounded York 48-33 for the game, which led to a 17-4 advantage for Brooklyn in second chance points.

For the Cardinals, Shadae Rice netted a team-best 17 points, while Joanna Josama recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Turnovers were a key to the BC win, as the Bulldogs forced York into 25 turnovers, which led to 24 points for Brooklyn.

For the game, BC shot 42.6% (29-68) from the floor and 47.8% (11-23) from three; while York was held to 24.4% (11-45) shooting from the field and 22.2% (4-18) from downtown. The Cardinals also struggled from the charity stripe shooting 48.5% (16-33) from the line.

Brooklyn will be back in action on Friday, February 10th, as the Bulldogs will look to complete an unblemished season in conference play, when BC plays host to CUNYAC South rival College of Staten Island. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
