Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener to Lehman, 1-0

Box Score Brooklyn, NY ---- The Brooklyn College Women's Soccer team christened its new on campus athletic complex this afternoon against City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival Lehman College Lightning. The Bulldogs put forth a valiant effort, dropping a hard fought battle, 1-0.

BC falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the CUNYAC; while the Lightning even their mark at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CUNYAC.

The first half featured a defensive stalemate as neither team was able to threaten offensively. Brooklyn controlled much of the tempo in the opening period outshooting Lehman 5-3.

The second half featured much of the same until the 69th minute, when Lehman's Samantha Dias, on a free kick, lifted a shot over Brooklyn's net minder Melissa St. Louis and into the back of the net, giving the Lightning a 1-0 advantage.

Lehman would hold on to the lead from there on out using a strong defensive effort to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.

St. Louis played all 90 minutes in goal for BC making four saves and surrendering the lone goal; while her counterpart Melanie Varillas also played all 90 minutes making five saves en route to the shutout win.

For the game, Brooklyn held the shooting advantage 10-6; while Lehman held the corner kick edge 3-2. Each team was whistled for seven fouls, while the Bulldogs were called off sides six times, compared to the Lightning being called off sides on two occasions.

Brooklyn will return to the pitch on Thursday, September 13th, as the Bulldogs will play host to borough rival St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in a non-conference match. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
