Box Score

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team outdueled the Hawks of Hunter College in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match earlier today by a score of 5-4. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall and remain perfect in CUNYAC play with a 3-0 mark; while the Hawks fall to an even 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The win also snapped BC's two-match losing streak.

With the match tied at 4-4, the deciding match came down at #3 singles between Brooklyn's Maria Sanz and Hunter's Angelina Usherenko. Usherenko took the first set 6-3, while Sanz battled back to take the second set, 6-2, to force a third and final set. During the third set, Sanz went down 5-2, before battling back to earn a hard-fought 7-6 (7-3) win.

The Bulldogs also took wins at #1 and #6 singles. Yuliya Orkis easily took care of her opponent Gina Yeo, 6-0, 6-0 at the #1 flight, while Gianna Gelosi handled her opponent Dana Dotta, 6-1, 6-0, at the #6 flight position.

The match began with doubles play, as Brooklyn took two of the three flights. The tandem of Orkis and Diana Rafailova downed the pairing of Shena Joseph and Angelina Usherenko, 8-3, at #1 double, while the duo of Norma Lynn Chabbott and Sanz edged out the team of Yeo and Sara Beck, 8-6, at #2 doubles.

“We went up 4-1 rather quickly, but Hunter really made us work for that fifth point,” said head coach Ahmad Odetalla. “I'm very proud of the way we competed today in such a crucial conference match.”

Brooklyn will be back on the courts on Tuesday, October 2nd, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on the Cougars of Medgar Evers College in another CUNYAC contest. The match is slated for a 4:00 pm start time.
