Big Second Half Lifts Women’s Basketball Past Hunter, 63-45

Box Score New York, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team outscored the Hunter College Hawks, 30-16, in the second half en route to its 63-45 win in a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) matchup on Wednesday Evening at the Hunter Sportsplex.

With the win, BC improves to 10-5 overall on the season and 5-2 in the CUNYAC; while Hunter falls to 4-10 overall on the year and 4-3 in the conference.

Senior guard Brittany Bowen led the way for the Bulldogs with a game-high 15 points, doing most of her damage from three hitting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, while junior guard/forward Vanessa D'Ambrosi chipped in with 10 points. Senior forward Tiffany Thompson grabbed 10 rebounds, to go with six points and classmate guard Charnelle Saint Laurent dished out five assists to go with eight points. Senior Trina Payne contributed with seven points coming off the bench, as the Brooklyn reserves outscored the Hunter bench 19-2.

Hunter's Nicole Lenard matched Bowen's game-high of 15 points, doing most of her damage from the free throw line going 9-for-15. Dimitra Thomopoulos finished with 14 points, while Ayanna Hudson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Kristen Sells contributed with eight points.

Defense was the key to the BC victory, as the Bulldogs held the Hawks to just 31.4% (11-35) shooting from the field for the game. Brooklyn's defense was especially stellar in the second half, which saw Hunter shoot just 21.4% (3-14) from the field. BC also forced Hunter into 35 turnovers, which led to 29 points for the visitors.

Following a layup from Thomopoulos that put the Hawks up eight, 14-6, with 13:19 left in the first half, Brooklyn began to chip away at its deficit and eventually tied the game at 19 all on a layup from Payne at the 6:31 mark. The Bulldogs would later take the lead on a three from Bowen, which put BC up 22-19, with 6:03 remaining before the intermission beak.

The Bulldogs would lead throughout the rest of the half and would go up by as many as seven, 31-24, on another Bowen three pointer, with 2:11 left in the first period. Brooklyn would eventually go into the locker room with a four-point halftime lead, 33-29.

BC came out of the halftime break on fire and used a 20-0 run to kick off the second half to cruise to its 63-45 victory.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 40.7% (24-59) from the field and 32.0% (8-25) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 58.3% (7-12) from the free throw line.

The Hawks did most of their scoring from the free throw line, as Hunter went 23-for-32 (71.9%) from the charity stripe.

Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, January 19th, as the Bulldogs will welcome the Beavers of The City College of New York (CCNY) to the West Quad Center for CUNYAC contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
