Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team has secured the #2 seed in the upcoming City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Hospital For Special Surgery (HSS) Women's Tennis Championships, by virtue of its 6-1 record in conference play.
Since 2009, head coach
Ahmad Odetalla has led his squad to the semifinals round three times (2009, 2011 and 2012) and the championship final round once (2011). In that time, the Bulldogs hold a 52-21 overall record and a 34-7 mark in the conference.
BC will look to take its success from the regular season into the conference championships and capture the league crown.
The Bulldogs will be in search of their third straight trip to the semifinals round, when they begin the championships with the quarterfinals round this Sunday, October 20th at 11:00 am at the Roosevelt Courts on the BC campus, by hosting the #7 seeded Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
Brooklyn defeated John Jay in their regular season meeting, 8-1, back on September 20th.
BC is once again led by junior
Yuliya Orkis, the reigning two-time CUNYAC Player of the Year. This season, Orkis currently boasts a 10-1 record in singles, including going 4-1 at the 2013 USTA/ITA Division III Northeast Regionals, advancing to the semifinals.
Newcomers junior
Rosalia Xue and sophomore
Suraya Maenhout have both made an immediate impact on the team, as Xue is 8-1 in singles, while Maenhout is 8-3 in singles.
Senior
Maria Sanz, a two-time CUNYAC All-Star, has put together another solid campaign for the Bulldogs, posting a 7-2 mark on the year.
If Brooklyn gets past John Jay, the Bulldogs will take on the winner between #3 Baruch College and #6 Lehman College in the semifinals round on Tuesday, October 22nd, which will be held at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY beginning at 4:00 pm.
The championship final will also be held at the USTA National Tennis Center, on Saturday, October 26th, beginning at 4:00 pm.
