Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Bulldogs will enter the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Men's Soccer Championships as the #3 seed after going 5-2-1 in conference play, while posting an overall record of 9-6-1.
BC came up just short of capturing the CUNYAC crown in 2012, as the Bulldogs lost to top seed Baruch College, 4-2, in the championship final.
Head Coach
Rawle Hensford will lean on his seniors
Dmitry Prokofyev,
Peter Vavalle and
Taras Frankivskyy to provide veteran leadership as Brooklyn will look to make another run at the conference championship.
Prokofyev leads the CUNYAC in points (34), goals (15) and game-winning goals (5), while Vavalle has anchored a solid BC defense that has totaled eight shutouts on the season and tops the conference in goals allowed with a 1.44 average. Frankivskyy has totaled two goals and three assists for seven points, while also contributing to Brooklyn's stout defense.
Other key figures to the Bulldogs' offense this season has been the play of sophomore
Oleg Tykhonravov and freshman
Kenny Benitez. Tykhonravov is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and two assists for 16 points, while Benitez is third in points with 11, registering three goals and five assists.
Freshman
Marco Thimm-Kaiser and junior
Fernand Grisales each have three goals apiece on the season to chip in on the offensive side of the ball.
In his first season in Brooklyn, junior
Kamil Ostrowski has appeared in 12 games, while making 11 starts, racking up over 1,005 minutes in goal, surrendering 17 goals for a 1.52 goals-against-average and recording 57 saves for a .770 save percentage. Ostrowski has also totaled six shutouts on the season.
Brooklyn will begin its quest for a conference championship on Wednesday, October 30th, as the Bulldogs will play host to the #6 seeded York College Cardinals in the quarterfinals round. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start time at Brooklyn College Field.
The Bulldogs defeated the Cardinals 4-0 during the regular season back on September 21st.
If BC is able to get past York for a second time this season, the Bulldogs will advance to the semifinals round on Saturday, November 2nd, where the winner between #2 City College of New York (CCNY) and #7 Lehman College will await.
The semifinals and final will be held at BC Field, as Brooklyn College will be serving as host of the championships.
