Women’s Swimming Sinks John Jay in Home Opener, 113-82

Brooklyn, NY --- In its 2013-2014 home and City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opener, on Thursday evening at the West Quad Center Pool, the Brooklyn College Women's Swimming team defeated the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice by a score of 113-82.

With the win, BC evens its overall record to 2-2 on the young season and 1-0 in the CUNYAC; while John Jay falls to 3-2 overall on the year and 1-2 in conference action.

The Bulldogs took home eight first place finishes in the 11 events that were held on the night.

Leading the way for Brooklyn were juniors Jenny Lee and Anju Gonzalez, as the duo each took home a pair of first place finishes in their individual events.

Lee was the first to touch the wall in both the 100-Yard Butterfly (1:13.24) and the 500-Yard Freestyle (6:20.97), while Gonzalez placed first in the both the 50-Yard (28.80) and the 100-Yard Freestyles (1:03.06).

Other BC swimmers taking first place honors were seniors Megan Pendergast (200-Yard Freestyle; 2:21.86) and Valentina Monroy (200-Yard IM; 2:37.21) and junior Enlisa Ng Ou (100-Yard Breaststroke; 1:18.76).

To go along with their first place finishes, Monroy (1:18.76; 100-Yard Butterfly) and Ng Ou (2:40.15; 200-Yard IM) also took home second place finishes.

In the long distance events, senior Nicole O'Brien took second place in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle with a time of 14:14.22 and a third place finish in the 500-Yard Freestyle with a time of 7:19.08; while sophomore Rosalia Xue, making her collegiate debut, took home a pair of third place finishes in the 200-Yard Freestyle (2:36.57) and the 100-Yard Breaststroke (1:25.20).

The most exciting event of the night was the opening event, as the Brooklyn quartet of Lee, Ng Ou, Monroy and senior Patricia Velloza (2:10.88) just out-touched the John Jay foursome of Kaylie Bruce, Veronika Savina, Vickie Hsieh and Vanessa Toro-Plaza (2:10.96) in the 200-Yard Medley Relay to take first place.

Brooklyn will return to the pool this Saturday, November 16th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Bronxville, NY to take part in a tri-meet against host Sarah Lawrence College and Mount Saint Mary College (NY). The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start time.
