Women's Soccer Cruises Past CCNY, 3-1, On Way To Conference Final On Saturday

Box Score Brooklyn, NY---In only the second year of existence for the Brooklyn College Women's Soccer Program, the team is headed to the CUNYAC Championship Final, after defeating #3 seeded CCNY in tonight's semifinal, 3-1. The #2 seeded Bulldogs will face the #1 seed, the Staten Island Dolphins, on Saturday at 2 pm on BC's home field, the host of the 2013 CUNYAC/Applebee's Championships.

Coach Patrick Horne's squad has been electric all year, as they got three first half goals to stifle any thoughts CCNY had of the upset victory, and improve to 14-3 overall in the squad's second season.

"We were mentally ready for the game today, said Coach Horne. "It showed by our ability to finish, which was one of our shortcomings throughout the season. Three goals in the first half against a tough team like CCNY was a great way to show our focus."

Bergelie Louis got the scoring started in the 24th minute, taking a rebound and evading the CCNY defense to shoot softly past the keeper to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage, and give the home crowd a reason to get loud.

Louis got right back at it later in the half, when, in the 39th minute, she sent a beautiful cross into the box, finding Sayla Flores, who worked her way through the Beaver defense and found the net for the 2-0 advantage.

Just 26 seconds later, Shani Abrahams exploeded down the right sideline, changed the ball to her left foot and found a streaking Shani Nakhid-Schuster, who touched in a goal on an outstanding play to give her team a commanding 3-0 lead just before the intermission.

While City entered the second half of play the desparate team, it was Brooklyn who had many scoring opportunities throughout, but could not capitalize, and niether team got on the board at all until the Beavers finally got on the board with 12:52 remaining in the game when they were awarded a penalty kick on a foul in the box. Yanique Newman kicked it left of the keeper and it rolled on through, as the deficit was cut to 3-1.

It would be too little, too late for CCNY as Brooklyn would hold on for the remainder, and earn a spot in Saturday's final.
"It is difficult to defeat a team three times in one year, but we were able to accomplish that today, "said Coach Horne. We are very focused and ready for Saturday's Final."

That contest, which features the top two seeds, Brooklyn and Staten Island, will begin at 2 pm at Brooklyn College Field. Tickets are FREE but must be reserved. Click here for the link to tickets for Championship Day.
