BC Men Finish Third; Women Finish Fourth at CUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championships

Bronx, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving teams concluded the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Championships that were held over three days at the APEX Pool on the campus of Lehman College on Saturday morning.

The BC Men finished the championships in third with 572 total points, while the BC Women came in fourth with 369 total points.  Host Lehman won the Men's championships with 1,052 total points, while Baruch College won the Women's championships with 1,132 total points.

For Brooklyn, it's the highest finish for both teams since the program was reinstated for the 2010-2011 season.
Antonio Gaspar shined in the diving events taking home the gold medal in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Diving events. Coming in the 1-Meter Dive on the first day of the championships, Gaspar scored 313.10 points to take the top spot, and in the 3-Meter Dive on the second day, he scored 317.65 to place first.

Also on day two, Valentina Monroy took the silver medal in the Women's 400-Yard IM with a time of 5:31.50, good for second place.

On the third and final day of the championships, Brooklyn took home the bronze medal in the Women's 400-Yard Freestyle Relay, as Megan Pendergast, Patricia Velloza, Jenny Lee and Monroy posted a third place finish with a time of 4:14.25.

Day One Recap (Thursday, January 31st)

On the men's side, senior Antonio Gaspar got the Bulldogs on the board early taking first place in the 1-Meter Diving event. Gaspar posted a top score of 313.10 to beat out seven other divers.

Coming in the Men's 500-Yard Freestyle, seniors James Marty and Patrick O'Leary-Gullo each posted a top-10 finish, as Marty came in seventh place with a time of 6:18.53, while O'Leary-Gullo took ninth place with a time of 6:35.87.

Freshmen Kevin Barros and Terry Tsui each posted a top-10 finish in the Men's 200-Yard IM, as Barros came in seventh with a time of 2:30.90 and Tsui came in 10th with a time of 2:35.28.

On the women's side, juniors Valentina Monroy and Megan Pendergast and sophomore Laura Rodriguez all did well in Women's 500-Yard Freestyle. Monroy came fourth with a time of 6:09.20, while Pendergast was right behind her with a time of 6:27.04, good for fifth place. Rodriguez posted a 10th place finish with a time of 7:07.38.

Sophomore Jenny Lee came in sixth in the Women's 200-Yard IM with a time of 2:44.19, while junior Patricia Velloza came in 10th in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 29.55.

The foursome of Pendergast, freshman Danielle Mollo-Siano, Velloza and Monroy posted a fifth place finish in the Women's 200-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:56.65.

Day Two Recap (Friday, February 2nd)

Senior Antonio Gaspar completed the sweep of the diving events, posting a first place finish in the Men's 3-Meter Diving event with a total score of 317.65, beating out seven other divers, to pick up his second gold medal of the championships. Gaspar also took first place in the 1-Meter Diving event that was held yesterday, with 313.10 total points to beat out seven other divers. With the sweep of the diving events at the CUNYAC Championships, Gaspar finishes the 2012-2013 undefeated.

Coming in the Men's 200-Yard Freestyle, BC had three swimmers in the top-10, as Brian Fay (2:22.19), Seth Weiss (2:31.19) and Shneur Fomin (2:38.85), came in seventh, eighth and 10th place, respectively.

The Bulldogs also had three top-10 finishes in the Men's 100-Yard Backstroke, as Kevin Barros (1:09.81), Daniel Nero (1:17.07) and Fong Zeng (1:20.11) came in eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Brian Clarke (1:18.47) and Wilson Lee (1:19.59) posted a ninth and 10th place finish, respectively, in the Men's 100-Yard Breaststroke.

Emil Isaakov (1:01.72) came in eighth in the Men's 100-Yard Butterfly and Terry Tsui (5:54.89) came in eighth in the Men's 400-Yard IM.

The quartet of Fay, Patrick O'Leary-Gullo, Barros and James Marty came in fifth place in the Men's 800-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 9:21.52.

On the Women's side, Valentina Monroy earned a silver medal in the Women's 400-Yard IM with a time of 5:31.50 to take second place.

In the Women's 100-Yard Butterfly, Jenny Lee (1:15.29) came in fifth place and Laura Rodriguez (1:24.52) came in 10th place.

Megan Pendergast (2:19.06) came in fifth in the Women's 200-Yard Freestyle, while Stephanie Caravello (1:15.37) came in sixth place in the Women's 100-Yard Backstroke.

In the relay events, the team of Caravello, Pendergast, Monroy and Patricia Velloza came in fifth place in the Women's 200-Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:14.03, while the foursome of Monroy, Rodriguez, Angela Redekop and Lee came in fifth in the Women's 800-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 9:54.22.

Day 3 Recap (Saturday, February 2nd)

Wilson Lee came in seventh in the Men's 1,650-Yard Freestyle with a time of 24:21.43. Ka Ho Yeung posted a ninth place finish in the same event with a time of 27:33.92.

Stephanie Caravello came in fourth place in the Women's 200-Yard Backstroke with a time of 2:46.03. In the Men's 200-Yard Backstroke, Terry Tsui came in eighth place with a time of 2:52.21.

In the Women's 100-Yard Freestyle, Megan Pendergast came in sixth with a time of 1:02.95, while Jenny Lee came in 10th with a time of 1:06.05. In the Men's 100-Yard Freestyle, Kevin Barros came in sixth with a time of 59.67, while Vince Fiorilli (1:03.55) and Seth Weiss (1:04.86), came in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

In the Men's 200-Yard Breaststroke, James Marty (2:46.27) and Patrick O'Leary-Gullo (2:55.85) came in ninth and 10th place, respectively.

In the Women's 200-Yard Butterfly, Valentina Monroy came in fourth place with a time of 2:43.86, while Laura Rodriguez came in 10th place with a time of 3:30.36. In the Men's 200-Yard Butterfly, Emil Isaakov posted a sixth place finish with a time of 2:44.80 and Fong Zeng came in ninth with a time of 3:18.44.
