Women’s Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team suffered a tough-luck, five-set, loss on Tuesday evening at the West Quad Center, as the Bulldogs fell to the visiting Panthers of The SUNY College at Old Westbury, 3-2 (25-15, 17-25, 20-25, 25-13, 15-12).

With the loss, BC drops to 2-4 overall on the season, while Old Westbury improves to 2-4 overall on the year.

The Panthers took the first set with relative ease, 25-15, before the Bulldogs battled back to take a 2-1 sets lead with 25-17 and 25-20 wins in the second and third sets, respectively. Old Westbury would not go down lightly; however, as the Panthers took a 25-13 win in the fourth set, to force a decisive fifth and final set. In the end, it would be the visitors who would squeak out a 15-12 win to earn the hard-fought five-set match.

For BC, senior Jillian Escobar registered a match-high 14 kills, to go along with 15 digs, for the double-double. Escobar also added five aces to her solid stat line. Freshman Julia Bogdan chipped in with 10 kills, while freshman Vera Zhuk dished out 19 assists. Defensively, sophomore Yelizaveta Malysheva led the way with 16 digs, while junior Najada Xhemo and freshman Anna Li had 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

For Old Westbury, senior Kimberly Catania recorded a triple-double with 20 assists, 13 kills and 11 digs. Catania also had a solid hitting percentage of .462 (13 kills/1 error/26 total attacks). Sophomore Rayn Brown and senior Jocelyn Small each finished with a double-double, as Brown recorded 12 kills and 11 assists and Small contributed with 11 kills and 15 digs. Senior Samantha Howley chipped in with a match-high 19 digs.

Brooklyn will be back in action on Thursday, September 19th, as the Bulldogs will play host to borough and conference foe Medgar Evers College. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start time at the West Quad Center.
