Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team defeated the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice by a score of 8-1 on Friday afternoon in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action at the Roosevelt Courts.
With the win, the Bulldogs remain unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the CUNYAC; while the Bloodhounds drop to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
BC took an early 2-1 advantage after doubles play, as the pairing of
Suraya Maenhout and
Diana Beshta cruised to an 8-0 win at #2 doubles, while the tandem of
Maria Sanz and
Gianna Gelosi gutted out a 9-7 victory at #3 doubles.
John Jay would earn its own grueling 9-7 win, as the team of Armine Kurkjian and Gabriela Baez took the #1 doubles flight.
The Bulldogs would take control of the match during singles play, as Brooklyn swept all six flights en route to its 8-1 win.
The match of the day came at #2 singles, as Maenhout outlasted Baez in a third set super tiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). For Maenhout, this would be her second straight third set super tiebreaker win.
Olayinka Sarayi cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles, while
Rosalia Xue eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win at #4 singles.
Rounding out the singles sweep were
Ekaterina Mospanova (7-5, 6-3), Sanz (6-1, 6-3) and Gelosi (6-4, 6-0), winning at #1, #3 and #6 singles, respectively.
"I think some of our players were a bit deflated after doubles, but they recovered to play well in singles," said Head Coach
Ahmad Odetalla. "We've got to give John Jay credit for making us earn this one. We now look forward to some more tough matches next week."
Brooklyn returns to action this Monday, September 23rd, as the Bulldogs will play host to St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The match is scheduled for a 4:30 pm start time at the Roosevelt Courts.
