Women’s Tennis Defeats Hunter, 6-3

Box Score

Flushing, NY --- Playing its third match in as many days, the Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team defeated the reigning City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champion, Hunter College Hawks, by a score of 6-3, at the USTA National Tennis Center.

With the win, BC improves to 8-0 overall on the season and 4-0 in the CUNYAC; while Hunter drops to 0-4 overall on the year and 0-2 in conference play.

The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 advantage, as Brooklyn swept through doubles play. The highlight match of the day came at #2 doubles, as the duo of Maria Sanz and Rosalia Xue fueled a furious comeback after being down 6-2, to rally and win 8-6. For Sanz and Xue, it was their second straight match coming back from a large deficit.

Yuliya Orkis and Suraya Maenhout won #1 doubles, 8-4; and Gianna Gelosi and Diana Beshta won 8-6 at #3 doubles.

"Our key to win this match was to win at least two of our doubles matches," said Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla. "Taking all three obviously put us in a great position. With Julie (Orkis) playing well at the top, the rest of the team fell in place behind her and contributed in this win. Getting wins over Baruch and Hunter back-to-back is definitely an accomplishment, but we have to remain focused, as we still have plenty of season left ahead of us."

Orkis (6-1, 6-1), Xue (6-4, 6-2) and Beshta (6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7)) also won their respective singles matches, winning at #1, #4 and #5.

Hunter picked up victories at #2, #3 and #6 singles, as Shena Joseph (6-1, 6-3) defeated Maenhout, Stephanie Ahwireng (6-4, 7-5) defeated Sanz and Sara Beck (6-1, 6-1) defeated Gelosi, respectively.

"We've been relying heavily on Suraya so far this season, and while she's had a tough stretch in the last few matches, she has really shown me something today," said Coach Odetalla. "She was up against a very tough opponent and could have easily succumbed to the pressure she faced, but there is just no quit in her. I expect her to bounce back and finish the season stronger than how she started it."

Brooklyn returns to action next Thursday, October 3rd, as the Bulldogs will play host to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island in another key CUNYAC showdown. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start time at the Roosevelt Courts.
