Union, NJ---The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team (1-0) began the season with an impressive road, non-conference, victory over Kean University (0-2) on Saturday afternoon by a score of 9-0.
For the Bulldogs, this is the first win over the Cougars since the 2008 season, when Brooklyn edged out Kean, 5-4.
Two-time City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Player of the Year, junior
Yuliya Orkis, led the way for BC, winning her #1 singles match 6-1, 6-0.
Orkis was also victorious in her #1 doubles match, 8-2, teaming up with sophomore transfer
Suraya Maenhout. Maenhout, who was making her BC debut, also took home a win at #3 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Along with Maenhout, junior transfers
Rosalia Xue and
Ekaterina Mospanova and freshman
Diana Beshta all made their Brooklyn debuts in impressive fashion. Xue took home wins in both doubles (#2, 8-6) and singles (#5, 6-3, 6-1) play, while Mospanova won her singles match (#2, 6-1, 6-0) and Bestha won her doubles match (#3, 8-5).
Veteran seniors
Maria Sanz,
Gianna Gelosi and
Olayinka Sarayi all continued to lead by example and picked up their stellar play from a season ago.
"I'm proud of the way our season just kicked off, considering how much trouble we've had with Kean in the past few years," said Head Coach
Ahmad Odetalla. "Four young ladies donned our uniform for the first time in a match and they all walked away with a win, while our returning players handled their business as well. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of something very special this year."
Brooklyn will return to action on Tuesday, September 10th, when the Bulldogs will host the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle at the Roosevelt Courts. The match is scheduled for a 4:30 pm start time.
