Women's Tennis Honors Seniors Before Defeating Lehman; Head To CUNYAC Semis Wednesday

Results

Brooklyn, NY---The #3 seeded Brooklyn College Women's Tennis Team got past Lehman 5-1 on Sunday, in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2014 CUNYAC Championships, advancing to Wednesday's semifinal where they will meet the winner of #2 Staten Island and #7 York. That match will take place at the United States Tennis Association National Tennis Center in Flushing at 5pm. Admission is free for all fans who wish to come out and support the Bulldogs in their quest to win the CUNYAC Championship.

Before the match, seniors Yuliya Orkis, Suraya Maenhout and Rosalia Xue were honored in their last home match.

On the court, Orkis showed why the senior has been a three-time CUNYAC Player of the Year, and a leading candidate for this year's award, as she dominated in both doubles and singles play. Teaming with Maenhout, the #1 doubles combo breezed past Lehman's Lynessa George and Kantomalala Rasedoara, 8-1.

Orkis then went on do defeating George, 6-0, 6-0 in #1 singles. Maenhout also won her #2 singles match in straight sets, defeating Rasedoara, 6-2, 6-0.  Maenhout's win gave Brooklyn their fifth point of the match, ending play and sending the team to the semifinal round.

Brooklyn's other wins came in #3 singles and #3 doubles.

The # 3 doubles match was a nail-biter as Anastasia Volovik and Love Olufemi won 9-7 over the Lightning's Katherine Otero and Elizaveta Ostanina. In #3 singles, it was the Buldogs' other senior, Rosalia Xue, who breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Natalie Carrasquilo.

Lehman got their lone win at #2 doubles, as Carrasquilo teamed up with Taylor Soriano to edge out Xue and Lauren Marion, 8-6.

"Lehman came out competing in doubles, but fittingly our seniors stepped up and won their singles matches in straight sets to give us the win," said Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla.  We look forward to facing Staten Island or York on Wednesday."

If the Bulldogs can advance past Wednesday's Semifinal, they will play in the Final on Sunday, also at the National Tennis Center in Flushing at 4 pm.
