The Cardinals finish the regular season with a 5-13 overall record and a 2-6 mark in the conference. The loss eliminates York from the conference championships.
Following a scoreless first half that saw Brooklyn outshoot York 16-6, the Bulldogs would finally breakthrough in the second half, as sophomore
Marco Thimm-Kaiser put the home team on the scoreboard scoring on a rebound opportunity off of a shot from
Andres Pertuz in the 50th minute.
With York trailing by one late in the game and looking for the equalizer to force overtime, Brooklyn would notch an insurance goal, as
Gabriel Isaksen sent a long pass down the field to an open Pertuz, who was able to beat the keeper one-on-one in the 89th minute to seal the victory.
Making his first career start in goal for BC, sophomore
Kenny Benitez played all 90 minutes in net and recorded three saves to secure the shutout. His counterpart, Jordan Chin, also played all 90 minutes, while registering 11 saves.
"I was very impressed with the way we played in the first half," said head coach
Rawle Hensford. "We combined well and created many scoring opportunities, but we were just unable to put away our chances. We came out with the same intensity in the second half and we were able to get the all-important go ahead goal to secure the game. We give York a lot of credit; they fought for 90 minutes, but we a bit better in key positions of the field."
"Congratulations to the team for another successful regular season, and with our current form we are poised to do well in the post season."
Brooklyn will now await its opponent for the quarterfinals round of the 2014 CUNYAC Championships, which will be held on Wednesday, October 29th at BC Field. Game time will be announced at a later date. The Bulldogs will have home field advantage throughout the conference postseason, as BC Field will again serve host of the CUNYAC Soccer Championships.
