Men's Basketball Wins Sixth Straight, Knocking Off Old Westbury, 90-80

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team won its sixth consecutive game on Tuesday night, knocking off non-conference opponent, the Panthers of SUNY College at Old Westbury, 90-80, at the West Quad Center.  Brooklyn improves to 6-1 overall on the season, with their only loss being a road overtime defeat at the hands of William Paterson University.  Old Westbury remains winless, falling to 0-5 overall on the year.

The Bulldogs have now scored 90 or more points in four straight games, as BC entered the game averaging 89.8 points-per-game, good for 10th in all of NCAA Division III in scoring offense.

Senior guard Jai Kellman led all scorers with a game and season-high 24 points. Classmate Valon Djombalic added 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while junior Egzon Gjonbalaj finished with his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, to go with three blocks. Junior Lorenzo Williams was the fourth Bulldog in double figures with 12 points, while classmate Jamel Gist dished out seven assists, to go with eight points.

The Panthers were led by Jaquan Potter's team-high 19 points, while Omari Trebuse and Mark Gjonlekaj each finished with 16 points apiece. Gjonlekaj also pulled down 11 rebounds to register the double-double.

Brooklyn never trailed in the game, as the Bulldogs seized control from the opening tip, jumping out to a 7-2 lead through the first four minutes of the game. BC would lead by as many as 12, 36-24, on a layup from Kellman with 4:09 left before the halftime break, en route to taking a 40-34 intermission lead.

The Panthers would get to within two, 42-40, with 18:21 left in the game; however, the Bulldogs would score eight straight points to regain a double digit lead, 50-40, with 16:21 left on the clock. BC would eventually lead by as many as 16 on a number of occasions, as Brooklyn would go to take home the 90-80 victory.

BC capitalized on 22 Old Westbury turnovers that led to 30 points off of turnovers for the game. Despite being outrebounded 50-48, the Bulldogs scored 20 second chance points, compared to 12 second chance points for the Panthers. Brooklyn also outscored Old Westbury 36-22 in the paint.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 36.8% (25-for-68) from the field, including 20.8% (5-for-24) from three. Free throws were key to the BC win, as the Bulldogs shot 62.5% (35-for-56) from the charity stripe.

Old Westbury shot 40.9% (27-for-66) from the field, including 42.9% (12-for-28) from beyond the arc. The Panthers also shot well from the line, shooting 73.7% (14-for-19) from the free throw line.

Up next for the Bulldogs will be another non-conference matchup, as Brooklyn will travel to Throggs Neck, NY to take on the Privateers of SUNY Maritime College. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start time. Live stats and video will be available. The game will be the third meeting against a team from the Skyline Conference, as Brooklyn is 2-0 against the Skyline this season, having defeated The Sage Colleges and Old Westbury.
