Box ScoreBrooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Bulldogs improved to 3-1 on the season Friday, as they won a non-conference match over Rutgers-Newark, 7-2. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 0-7 with the loss.
Brooklyn took two out of three doubles to start the match. BC's
Yuliya Orkis and
Suraya Maenhout blanked the Rutgers duo of Maggie Tchorzewska and Yara Elsekhely, 8-0, in the #1 match.
In the #2 match, the Bulldogs'
Muriel Dervich and
Diana Beshta got past the Scarlet Raiders' pair of Catherine Popow and Danielle Merritt, 8-5. Rutgers would take the #3 match, 8-1, as Nandini Gami and Raquel Asante defeated Anastasi Volovik and Fatima Serag.
Brooklyn pulled away in singles play, as they won each of the top five flights in straight sets.
Orkis, a senior and BC's top player, led the way, winning her #1 singles match over Popow, 6-1, 6-1, to remain undefeated on the year.Maenhout defeated Merritt at #2, 6-2, 6-2, while Dervich got by Tchorzewska, 6-1, 6-1 in their #3 match.
Beshta defeated Elsekhely, 6--3, 6-3, as the two dueled at #4 singles, while
Rosalia Xue, who did not play in doubles, knocked off Gami in the #5 match, 6-2, 6-1l.
Asante was able to pick up a victory for Rutgers, defeating
Lauren Marino, who also didn't compete in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, in the #6 match.
Brooklyn will look to improve their out of conference record to 3-0 tomorrow, as they travel to Richard Stockton to take on the Ospreys in a 1 pm start before returning home on Tuesday to face Baruch in a big conference match.
