Box ScoreBrooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team (4-2) defeated the Bearcats of Baruch College (3-3 overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) on Tuesday afternoon, 8-1, to improve to 2-1 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play.
The Bulldogs took an early 2-1 advantage after doubles play, as the tandem of
Muriel Dervich and
Diana Beshta cruised past the duo of Diana Federkova and Natalie Herzberg, 8-1, at #2 doubles, while the pairing of
Rosalia Xue and
Lauren Marino edged out the team of Lizabeth Yagupolskiy and Helen Lee, 8-6, at #3 doubles.
The Bearcats took #1 doubles, as Allie Jackson-Hing and Hayley Bester got the better of
Yuliya Orkis and
Suraya Maenhout, 8-5. For Orkis, the loss was just the third of her impressive career in doubles play. She is now 30-3 all-time in doubles. Orkis' last loss in doubles play came during her freshman year in 2011 at the CUNYAC Championship final, where Orkis and Liana Rivkin fell to Hunter College's Jennifer Kraham and Flavia Guidi, 8-2, at #1 doubles.
Moving to singles play, the Bulldogs would dominate, as BC swept all six flights en route to its 8-1 victory.
Orkis (6-1, 6-1), Maenhout (6-4, 6-2), Dervich (6-3, 6-1), Beshta (6-0, 6-0), Xue (6-0, 6-0) and Marino (6-0, 6-1) all took home wins in their respective singles match.
The win at #1 singles for Orkis marked the 40th of her career. She is now 40-1 all-time in singles with her lone loss coming to Ithaca College's Cristina Nunez, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals round of the 2013 USTA/ITA Division III Women's Northeast Regional Championships.
For Marino, her win at #6 singles was her first career victory.
Brooklyn returns to action on Wednesday, October 1st as the Bulldogs will travel to Purchase, NY to take on the Panthers of SUNY Purchase. The match is scheduled for a 4:30 pm start time.
