Women’s Volleyball Falls to Rutgers-Newark in Straight Sets

Box Score Newark, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team (1-5) was defeated in straight sets on Thursday night on the road against the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark (2-0), 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-19).

The first set saw seven ties and two lead changes. Tied at 18 late in the set, the Scarlet Raiders would go on a 4-1 run to go ahead 22-19 and eventually take the 25-21 victory.

Brooklyn controlled the second set early on, building a commanding 11-5 lead. However, Rutgers-Newark would not go down lightly, as the home team rattled off a 19-4 run to seize control of the set, 24-15. The Scarlet Raiders would go on to take a 25-18 win to go up 2-0.

In the third set, Brooklyn again took an early lead, going up 8-4, but Rutgers-Newark again made a run, scoring five straight points to go up 9-8. The Bulldogs would later lead 14-13, but that would be BC's last lead, as the hosts went on an 8-2 run to go up 21-15, en route to their 25-19 win to take the match and complete the straight sets victory.

Overall, the match featured 15 ties and six lead changes.

Sophomores Anna Li and Francesca LoCascio each finished the match with seven kills for Brooklyn, while freshman Jessica Yin dished out 19 assists in her collegiate debut. LoCascio also added two solo blocks, a block assist and an ace to her stat line. Defensively, senior Fanny Ng contributed with 14 digs, while junior Yelizaveta Malysheva added 13 digs.

For Rutgers-Newark, Karolina Kopacz totaled a match-best 12 kills, while hitting .429. Christina Maglione (.333) added eight kills, while Samantha Renfree finished the night with seven kills. Nathalie Breining paced the offense with 28 assists, while Sue Riley chipped in with 20 digs. Sydney Tuman ended the night with 11 digs.

Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, September 6th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Wayne, NJ to participate in a tri-match. BC will start the day against Manhattanville College (2:00 pm) and conclude the day against host William Paterson University (4:00 pm). Live stats will be available for both games.
