Brooklyn Defeats Baruch, 3-1, Moves Into 3rd Place in CUNYAC Standings

Box Score Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer team got a little taste of revenge on Saturday afternoon as they defeated conference rival Baruch, 3-1, in a rematch of last season's conference title game that they dropped, 1-0.  This was a crucial game in the CUNYAC Standings, as the Bearcats entered the game in second place with twelve points and a 4-1 record, while the Bulldogs came in with a 2-1-1 mark, and seven points.  Brooklyn now moves into third in the standings with ten points, only two behind Baruch, however BC has a better record percentage-wise with a 3-1-1 mark.

It was BC's freshman forward, Ezike Somtochukwu, who got the scoring started for the Bulldogs, after wrestling away the ball from the Bearcat defender and keeper, who came out very aggressively, Somtochukwu put a touch on the ball into the empty net to put Brooklyn up 1-0, and notch his fourth score on the year.

Baruch answered back quickly, as Stanley Goldberg scored on a beautiful corner kick from the right corner, tying the contest at one.

Brooklyn pulled ahead before the half, as it was Somtochukwu who put a great ball through the Baruch defense to a slashing Valentyn Kharko, who set up and put a nice shot to the left of the keeper, notching his fifth goal on the year, and third in two games, to put the Bulldogs up 2-1 at the break.

Baruch came out of the half aggressively, however on a counter by Brooklyn, Jerry Morales was fouled by the Baruch keeper, Xavier Carillo, giving the hosts a penalty kick. BC's Marco Thimm-Kaiser took the kick and put in for the commanding 3-1 lead. For Thimm-Kaiser, it was his fourth goal on the year, with all four coming over the course of the team's last three contests.

Brooklyn held on tight for the remainder of the game, even with playing the last final 13 minutes without Morales who received his second yellow card in the second half.

Brooklyn has now clinched a spot in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship Tournament, and has a good shot to be a top four seed, which will give them a chance to host a quarterfinal round game.  The semifinal and final rounds are at Brooklyn College Field, the home of the CUNYAC Men's and Women's Soccer Chamionships.
