Marymount Outlasts Brooklyn in Tournament Opener, 47-40

Saints hit three-pointer with :33 seconds left.

Box Score Arlington, VA---The BC women's basketball team dropped a tough 47-40 decision this evening to Marymount University (3-0) in the night-cap opener of the Pablo Coto Memorial Tournament hosted by the Saints. Brooklyn falls to 1-2 overall on the young season. BC will play in the tourney's consolation game tomorrow against Averett University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

Trailing by only a point with :33 left in the game, the Bulldogs were stunned by a Saints' three-point make just after almost stealing the ball for a possession to win the game. The three gave the home team a 44-40 advantage, which they would build on with free throws following a missed BC jumper to cut the lead to two with :11 left in the contest.

The low-scoring affair began with the home team leading 9-8 after the first period. Both teams also struggled offensively in the second period. However, the Bulldogs were able to outscore the Saints by a point, knotting the game at 19-19 at the half.

BC would find some rhythm in the third period, leading by six going into the final period thanks to two made free-throws by junior forward Olivia Colbert.

Disappointed by the outcome but happy with the fight the Bulldogs put up against the host squad, Head Coach Alex Lang commented, "We had a great shot to come into this tournament and knock off the host team, but just couldn't make the big play when it counted, and Marymount was able to make a few plays late.  I was proud of my team's fight and know that each game will help us get to where we want to go."

The Bulldogs jumped out to an eight-point lead in the first 17 seconds of the fourth period on a Justine Vento put-back.

Marymount clawed their way back into the game methodically and eventually took a 39-38 lead with 3:18 remaining in the contest. It would be the lead they never let go of for the rest of the game.

The Bulldogs had a rough outing from beyond the arc especially in the second half shooting 1-8 (12.50%).

Olivia Colbert led the Bulldogs with a 12-point 10-rebound double-double. Junior center Maya Agee-Thomas added six points to go along with six rebounds and six blocks.
