New York, NY---Plagued by injuries to start conference play, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team banded together to cruise to their first CUNYAC victory, 84-56, at John Jay tonight to move to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play. John Jay drops to 0-8 and 0-4 with the loss. The Bulldogs return to action on Monday as they travel back to Manhattan to take on New York University at Hunter College at 7:00 pm.
Brooklyn would shoot a staggering 58.82% from the floor in the second half, shooting 51.5% for the game to the Bloodhounds' 34.4%. Junior guard
Maynard Grant IV was perfect example of the Bulldogs' shooting accuracy, connecting on 6-8 shots on the evening including 3-4 from behind the arc. He was also 2-2 from the charity stripe.
Played evenly to start the contest, the Bulldogs would go on a 9-1 run sparked by a
Nathan Josaphat three-point make with 5:49 remaining in the first half. A
Michael Tesoriero three-point make would give the Bulldogs a 36-25 advantage at halftime.
The Bulldogs continued their momentum from the first half into the second, starting the period with a 9-2 run including three-point makes by Grant and senior guard
Austin Wood to take an 18-point lead at the 16:58. After a couple of John Jay buckets, senior center Enees Nikovic knocked down a jumper with 13:00 left in the game to give the Bulldogs a 20-point lead. Brooklyn wouldn't look back for the rest of the game, leading by as many as 30 points in the second half.
Nikovic led the Bulldogs with his seventh double-double of the season finishing with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Grant added 17 points and dished out five assists on the evening. Earning the first start of his BC career, senior guard
Valdon Baptiste scored 16 points on 8-12 from the floor.
John Jay was led by last year's CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Essien Epps' 19 points and 12 rebounds.
