BC defeats CCNY, 74-49, in CUNYAC Semifinal

CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK New York, NY---Making a big postseason statement, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team rolled to a 74-49 CUNYAC semifinal win over CCNY this evening.  With the victory, No. 1 Brooklyn heads to their third CUNYAC Championships final appearance in a row on Friday against familiar foe No. 3 College of Staten Island who knocked off No. 2 Lehman College in the other semifinal game tonight. "We are extremely excited to be heading back to the CUNYAC Championship Game," said head coach Alex Lang.  "We got a lot of great contributions tonight and were happy to come out with the victory."

Setting the tone of the game from the opening tip, 11 of the 13 Bulldogs that played tonight scored at least two points tonight.  Junior guard Karen Mak led BC with 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists on the evening.  Brooklyn dominated the Beavers in every statistical category for the game especially the offensive boards, out-rebounding CCNY 19-8.   The Bulldogs shot 41.4% from the field to the Beavers' 23.2% for the game.

Heading into the final period with a 56-25 lead, the Bulldogs showed no let up in the final ten minutes of the game maintaining a commanding lead until the final buzzer.

Brooklyn opened the second half with an 11-0 run that the Beavers finally put an end to with a couple of makes from the charity stripe with just under four minutes remaining in the third period.  The Beavers would put a dent in the Bulldogs' lead toward the end of the period to cut BC's lead to 31 heading into the fourth.

The Bulldogs looked to put the Beavers away from the opening tip-off, jumping out to a 12-2 run in the first six minutes of the contest.  Playing well on both ends in transition, BC forced the Beavers to take a timeout in the first five minutes of the game.  Senior center Maya Ajee-Thomas scored the Bulldogs' first two buckets.  A made three by sophomore wing Alexandra Moogan gave Brooklyn a 15-4 lead with just under a minute to play in the opening period.  Ajee-Thomas scored her third basket of the period with just under thirty seconds left in the first period giving BC a 17-4 lead heading into the second period.

Moogan sparked the scoring for the Bulldogs in the second period with a made jumper followed by a three-point make by senior guard Taylor Gallagher to give Brooklyn a 22-4 advantage in the opening minute.  A Karen Mak three-point make gave Brooklyn a 25-5 lead with just under eight minutes to go in the first half.  Junior guard Lauren D'Agostino added a three-point make of her own with just over two minutes to play in the opening half to give BC a 37-13 lead. Brooklyn would head into halftime with a commanding 40-15 lead.

Senior guard Twanda Holder and senior center Maya Ajee-Thomas scored twelve points apiece tonight.  Holder would be named Player of the Game, shooting 5-7 from the field including 2-3 from beyond the arc and grabbing six rebounds. Ajee-Thomas led BC on the boards with eight rebounds.  Moogan finished with ten points in 18 minutes off of the bench.
