USTA Billie Jean King US National Tennis Center----For the first time in program history, the Brooklyn College women's tennis team captured the CUNYAC Championship this afternoon, defeating Hunter, 5-1, in the conference tournament final! With the victory, the Bulldogs receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in May. The Bulldogs improved to 15-2 with the victory while Hunter ends the season with a 9-4 mark as the conference Runners-Up.
"It feels pretty good. We worked hard the whole season, starting back in mid-August," stated Brooklyn Head Coach,
David Wallis, said
about winning the title. "Most of the team has been together for two or three years. We finally put it all together with a nice championship."
With No.2 Flight doubles pair,
Georgeen Belrose and
Rosa Aksanov, rolling to an 8-0 victory and the No. 3 duo of
Shannel Johnson and
Elizaveta Meshkalova battling to an 8-4 win, it would be up to No. 1 doubles,
Ievgeniia Kostenko and
Tamila Latif-Zade, to give BC a clean sweep and commanding lead heading into singles play. Despite trailing 4-0, Kostenko and Latif-Zade would complete an 8-6 comeback victory giving the Bulldogs plenty of momentum for singles.
Kostenko, who would be named tournament MVP after another undefeated season, cruised to a (6-1, 6-0) win at No.1 singles giving Brooklyn a 4-0 lead. Hunter didn't lay down as they would take No. 5 singles to cut BC's lead to 4-1. However, sophomore
Rosa Aksanov clinched the title for Brooklyn at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-2) shortly following the completion of the No. 5 Flight match!
""I am feeling incredible. Emotions are out of control," Kostenko exclaimed following the match. "I can't even describe how I feel. It is just so amazing and I am so happy."
