CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK---For the fourth consecutive year, the No. 1 seed Brooklyn College women's basketball team is heading to the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), having defeated No. 4 seed, Hunter College, 64-57, in the first semifinal of the evening at CCNY tonight. Brooklyn improves to 23-3 with the victory while Hunter ends the season with an 18-9 mark. The Bulldogs will play the winner of No. 2 seed College of Staten Island for the CUNYAC Championship on Friday, February 23rd, at 6:00 pm. Friday's championship will be a rematch of last year's final.
"Wasn't our best game of the season, I felt we were out of sorts in the beginning of the game and didn't adjust well to what they [Hunter] were doing defensively," BC Head Coach,
Alex Lang, would comment after the game. "But we pulled it together and made some plays in the second half to close it out."
A tough shooting night from the field for both teams, the Bulldogs finished with a 38% (24-63) to a 27% (17-62) edge.
Clinging to a 61-57 lead with under ten seconds left in the game, Brooklyn connected on three of four free-throws to put the game out of reach for the Hawks. Junior forward, Jasmine Hansgen iced the contest with four seconds to play.
With Brooklyn leading, 47-37, heading into the final quarter, the Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 11-3 to pull within two points, 50-48, with 6:42 left in the contest. BC senior guard,
Karen Mak, stopped the bleeding with a make off of the glass to give Brooklyn a two-possession lead, 52-48, with 6:10 remaining in regulation. Mak turned in one of her patented versatile performances, finishing the game with a team-high 15 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.
Brooklyn made its move halfway through the third quarter, using a 7-0 run to take a 42-31 lead with 2:47 remaining. BC freshman guard, Taylor George, splashed a three during the rally to put the Bulldogs up nine. George would finish with 12 points, shooting 2-4 from beyond the arc on the evening.
A pair of free throws buried by senior forward
Weronica Green ended the scoring drought at the 7:46 mark to start the second quarter. The Hawks would retake the lead, 18-16, for the first time since early in the opening quarter with 6:30 to go in the first half. Trailing the Hawks 22-18, the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to grab a 27-24 halftime lead. Green would score seven points during the run, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds at the half. She turned in one of her best performances of the season totaling 13 points and eight rebounds for the game.
Hunter scored the first two buckets of the game for its largest lead from there on out before the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run. The Hawks stopped the Brooklyn run with 4:30 left in the opening quarter. Hunter would tie the game, 14-14, to end the first quarter thanks to an 8-0 run.
Hunter's Jade Aponte led the Hawks with 15 points. Ashley Arias added 11 points to go along with seven rebounds.
