No. 4 BC Grinds Out 5-3 Win Over No. 5 Lehman to Advance to the CUNYAC Semifinals

CUNYAC QUARTERFINALS Brooklyn College---Twenty-four hours in the making due to yesterday's rainout, the Brooklyn College men's tennis team defeated Lehman College, 5-3, in the Quarterfinals of the CUNYAC Championships this afternoon to advance to its first conference semifinals in four years.  The No. 4 seeded Bulldogs will take on No. 1 Baruch tomorrow, April 29, in the Semifinals at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY at 1:00 pm.  Lehman ends the season with an 8-6 overall record.

With Brooklyn leading 4-3 and needing one victory in two singles matches battling in the third sets, it would be BC senior, Chevaughn Mattis, who clinched the victory for the Bulldogs at the No. 6 flight.  Despite losing the first set, 6-4, to Lehman's Brian Persuad, Mattis, who entered the tournament as an alternate would dominate the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-1.

"I felt that if I came in a lot more aggressive starting with doubles, I could help the team win," Mattis would explain after the postseason match.  "I've had a tendency of being passive during the season and not taking any chances, but today I felt in order to win I needed an all-out strategy and fortunately it worked and we're moving on!"

Prior to his heroics in singles, Mattis and No. 3 doubles partner, Kevin Gryka, gave Brooklyn its first victory of the afternoon with an 8-3 win over Lehman's Ramsey Tapia and Brian Persuad.  BC's No. 1 doubles pair, freshmen Justin Vasquez and CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Rohan Mathur, gave Brooklyn a 2-1 lead with an 8-6 victory over the Lightning's Michael Forte and Won Sik Park to complete the doubles portion of the match.

"The win at No. 3 doubles was a huge deciding factor," second-year BC Head Coach, David Wallis, would comment following the match.  "Chevaughn got the call and answered for us in a big way in both singles and doubles," Wallis would continue on Mattis' key performances.

Mathur would roll to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lehman's Richard Williams in No. 2 singles before the Lightning's Ioannis Vasos returned the favor with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Brooklyn's Jon Kim.

Brooklyn's Vasquez would then give the Bulldogs a 4-2 advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 win over LC's Michael Forte at the top flight of singles.  The Lightning's Arman Hossain cut the BC lead to 4-3 with a No. 5 flight singles win over the Bulldogs' Gryka, 6-4, 6-4 setting up the suspense of the third set matches still in progress at the No. 3 and No. 6 flights.

Falling to Lehman's Won Sik Park, 6-1, in the first set of No. 3 singles, BC's Samuel Meyerovich battled back to win the second, 6-4  The third set was tied 4-4 when Mattis scored the team victory for the Bulldogs.
