Anthony McClean's 41 points, the No. 4 seeded Brooklyn College men's basketball team rolled in the second half past No. 5 Medgar Evers this afternoon in the CUNYAC Championships quarterfinals. The Bulldogs advance to the conference tournament semifinals at No. 1 Baruch College on Wednesday, February 20, at 7:00 pm. Brooklyn improves to 15-11 with the postseason win while Medgar Evers closes out the 2018-19 season with a an overall record of 9-17.
"We were able to make some adjustments at halftime that helped opened thingsup offensively in the second half," first year Brooklyn Head Coach, Jeff Jean-Baptiste would explain after the win. "Noah [Shy] did a great job of getting in the lane, which allowed Anthony [McClean] to do what he's capable of on the perimeter. I also credit our defensive adjustments to help us get out in transition and make some plays."
With the Bulldogs trailing the Cougars by as many as 10 points in the first half and 43-34 at halftime, Brooklyn opened up the second half with an 8-0 run sparked by a Shy layup on the Bulldogs' first possession. McClean would eventually tie the game, 45-45, with 16:43 remaining with one of his CUNYAC Tournament record 11 three-point field goals of the contest. He then gave Brooklyn it's first advantage of the contest and the lead for good with another trey two minutes later.
Brooklyn continued to roll, leading by as many as 28 points with 2:30 left in the contest. McClean scored 33 points in the second half alone while connecting on 9-11 from beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs were successful on 9-13 from behind the arc in the second half and 16-33 for the game.
Medgar Evers was paced by senior guard Justin Sutton's team-high 20 points, scoring 15 in the first half to help keep the Cougars on top in the first twenty minutes of action. It was a Sutton three-point make that helped the Cougars jump out to a 7-0 lead to start the game.
The Bulldogs held Medgar Evers to 11-31 from the floor in the second half.
In addition to McClean's monster performance, Shy added 21 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
