Bronxville, NY---The Brooklyn College women's volleyball team went 1-1 at a non-conference trimatch hosted by Sarah Lawrence this afternoon. Brooklyn avenged a season opening loss to the Gryphons by the defeating the host in the first match of the day, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 28-26, 25-12). The Bulldogs closed out their day with a hard-fought defeat to Rutgers-Newark, 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 11-25, 25-21). Brooklyn moves to 8-5 with the split. The Bulldogs return to conference play at Medgar Evers College this Tuesday, September 24, at 6pm.
Match Summary vs. Sarah Lawrence
-Freshmen outside hitters,
Ashley Fung and
Madison Cronk, combined for 23 of Brooklyn's 41 kills.
-With the match tied, 1-1, the Bulldogs pulled out a 28-26 win in the third game after trailing the Gryphons 14-8. Fung and Cronk put away back-to-back kills respectively for the crucial third game win.
-BC's win in the third proved to be the backbreaker as the Bulldogs rolled in the fourth game, jumping out to a 17-7 lead and never looking back.
-Brooklyn served up 19 aces to SLC's six.
Leading the Bulldogs
-Fung finished with a match-high 14 kills.
-In addition to nine kills, Cronk served a match-high six aces and came up with a match-high 24 digs.
-Sophomore setter,
Ezri Shor, matched a career-high with 31 assists.
Leading the Gryphons
-Melanie Coleman put away a team-high 11 kills. She also had a match-high four blocks.
Match Summary vs. Rutgers-Newark
-The first two games could have gone either way, but the Scarlet Knights were able to capitalize on quick late rallies.
-Brooklyn rolled in the third game and after a late five-score rally, the Bulldogs had a 24-10 lead.
-Trailing RUN, 23-17, the Bulldogs hung around, cutting the Scarlet Knight lead to 23-20 down the stretch. However, Rutgers-Newark was able to close out the game and match scoring to of the three-last points made.
-Rutgers-Newark blocked seven attacks to Brooklyn's one.
