New York, NY---No. 5 Brooklyn College used a strong second half to knock off No. 4 Hunter College in the quarterfinals of the CUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship tournament this afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 11-15 overall with the postseason win and advances to the semifinals of the tourney to take on No. 1 John Jay College this Tuesday, February 25, at John Jay. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm. Hunter closes out the season with a 10-16 record.
BC senior guard,
Anthony McClean, paced three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring with a team-high 17 points while knocking down five three-pointers on the afternoon.
"It was a gritty team effort and everyone did their job," second-year BC Head Coach,
Jeffrey Jean-Baptiste would comment following the conference tournament win. "Wendly [Alce] was huge for us in the middle, which opened things up for the guards in the second half."
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a pair of unanswered buckets forcing an early Hawk timeout. Hunter eventually broke the 1:30 scoring drought with a successful George Keener trip at the foul line to cut the Bulldog lead to 37-32. A layup finished by junior forward,
Wendly Alce, gave BC a 41-32 lead, BC's largest advantage by that point of the contest. He would finish with eight points on 4-5 shooting from the floor and grab eight boards in 18 minutes. A pair of converted free throws by junior guard,
Noah Shy, gave Brooklyn its first double-digit lead of the game with just under 13 minutes to go. Shy finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds.
A three-point make drained by junior wing,
Kayin Olajide, gave the Bulldogs even more momentum and a 50-38 advantage with 11:30 to go in the contest. Brooklyn extended their lead to as many 15 points before Hunter responded with a 9-0 run cut BC's lead to six with just over five minutes to play.
However, Brooklyn had their own answer with back-to-back three-point makes buried by McClean and senior guard,
Jordan Wright to kick the lead back up to ten with 2:45 left in regulation. Wright finished the game with 14 points and five assists.
"We faced some adversity toward the end of the season and today was a result of facing it as a team," McClean would comment after the game. "We played for each other and everyone stepped up."
Brooklyn shot 10-31 from beyond the arc to Hunter's 2-16 for the game.
The Bulldogs knocked down four threes in the first 4:30 of play to take an early 12-6 lead. Both Tesoriero and McClean knocked down a pair each in the long-range flurry. Tesoriero gave Brooklyn a 3-0 advantage on the first possession of the game.
