New Jersey City, NJ---The Brooklyn College dropped a pair of non-conference matches on Sunday in a trimatch hosted by New Jersey City University. In the first match of the day, the Bulldogs fell to the home team, NJCU, 3-1 (15-25, 13-25, 26-24, 9-25) before closing out the day with a 3-0 (9-25, 18-25, 12-25) loss to Kean University. Brooklyn drops to 3-6 overall with the non-conference results. The Bulldogs will look to bounce back on Tuesday, March 1, as they open conference play at home against Medgar Evers at 6pm.
Despite falling behind 2-0 in the first match of the day against NJCU, the Bulldogs didn't go away easily. Brooklyn would jump out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set. The Gothic Knights rallied back throughout the set , taking 22-20 lead before the Bulldogs scored four unanswered points capped by a kill put away by
Zhao Ming Li. NJCU responded with two straight points of their own to tie the set, 24-24. Brooklyn avoided the sweep with back-to-back scores with
Darren Roach putting away the set-winning kill. The home team was able to supress the BC momentum in the fourth set, accelerating out to an 8-0 lead and never looking back.
Zhao Ming Li led the way for the Bulldogs with 12 kills nd three block assists finishing with 13.5 points. Mahmoud Serour put away a match-high 13 kills for the Gothic Knights.
In the second match of the day, Brooklyn got off to a slow start against Kean. Despite being tied with the Cougars, 7-7, in the second set, Kean would control the remainder of the match from that point on. The Cougars served up 14 aces for the match while the Bulldogs weren't able to get one past the Kean defense.
Zhao Ming Li added nine more kills and a pair of blocks to his day in the loss.
David Li had a solid match at the net for BC finishing with four blocks. Kean's balanced offensive attack had three Cougars put away a team-high six kills each.
