Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College softball team closed out the 2023 season on Thursday after being eliminated on the first day of the CUNYAC Championship Tournament hosted at Brooklyn College. Entering the tourney as the No. 4 seed for the first time since 2014, the Bulldogs fell to No. 1 John Jay, 11-0 (5 Innings), in the first game of the day. Despite a valiant defensive effort in their second game against No. 2 Baruch, the Bulldogs would fall, 2-0, ousting them from postseason play. BC ends the season with a 12-17 overall record, doubling their win total from last year.
How It Happened vs. John Jay
- Brooklyn opened the game with a leadoff double slapped by Zoey Van Vleet. However, John Jay starting pitcher, Jailene Santiago, would right the ship immediately, retiring the next three Bulldog batters. She also contributed with her bat in the bottom of the first, crushing a two-run homer to give John Jay a 2-0 advantage.
- The Bulldogs wouldn't manage another hit until the top of the fifth inning on a Dasha Goodman single.
- John Jay added three runs in the second inning before unloading for five runs in the fourth on three hits and a pair of BC errors.
For the Bulldogs vs. John Jay
- Goodman and Van Vleet were 1-2 for the game.
- Brooklyn starting pitcher, Danielle Guzzardi, pitched all five innings, yielded eight hits, and was charged with six runs.
How It Happened vs. Baruch
- In a pitchers' dual, Baruch took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on three hits.
- The Bearcats added to their slim lead in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single.
- Brooklyn threatened in the top of the sixth inning beginning with a base hit cracked by Aleah Rafat. Melanie Millan would move her to second with a single with one out. However, the rally was cut shut as Baruch managed outs the next two batters.
For the Bulldogs vs. Baruch
- Van Vleet went 1-3 and stole a base.
- Rafat went 1-2 with a single.
