#1 Brooklyn Rolls to CUNYAC Championship Four-Peat Past No. 2 John Jay

  • NEW YORK, New York-----The Brooklyn College women's basketball team claimed their fourth straight CUNYAC title, defeating No. 2 John in the conference championship game, 72-54, at Baruch College on Friday.  Meeting the Bloodhounds in the third consecutive tournament final, top-seeded Brooklyn outscored John Jay, 27-12 in the second quarter for the cushion they needed for the championship victory.  It is Brooklyn's fifth conference title in the last six seasons and first under rookie Head Coach, Megan Campbell.  The Bulldogs improve to 18-8 with the win while the Bloodhounds drop to 19-8.

How It Happened: 

  • Brooklyn jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game, beginning with a fast-break layup finished by Alina Estrella before John Jay responded with 9-0 run.  BC would close out the opening quarter with a 6-2 run.    

  • The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with five unanswered points beginning with a three-point make buried by Ericka James.  A three-pointer by Aleah Rafat gave BC a 20-15 advantage with 7:13 left in the first half.  Brooklyn continued to cruise in the second quarter, draining four threes during the ten-minute span to take a 37-23 halftime lead.  Junior forward, Mary Dolgin was instrumental during the late first half run, scoring five points while making one of the four Brooklyn threes.    

  • John Jay wouldn't fold, shaving Brooklyn's 14-point halftime lead down to five with two minutes to go in the third quarter.  The Bulldogs weathered the Bloodhound storm, closing out the period on a 7-2 run capped by a three-pointer splashed by sophomore Anna Kitch giving BC a 53-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.    

  • Brooklyn continued their momentum into the fourth quarter, extending their lead to as many as 21 points in the final ten minutes of action.   

  • The Bulldogs' bench outscored John Jay's 18-5. BC also shot 88.5% from the free-throw line as a team to John Jay's 61.9%.  

For the Bulldogs: 

  • Named the game's Most Valuable Player, Estrella led the way with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double.  She also dished out six assists.   

  • Dior Dorsey nearly had a double-double of her own contributing 11 points and 8 rebounds.  She also blocked a pair of shots.   

  • Anna Kitch led the way defensively with 3 steals while tacking on 8 points and grabbing 7 boards.   

  • Ericka James added 13 points while going a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line.
