Bulldogs Secure Spot in Postseason With a Pair of Big Conference Wins Over Lehman on Senior Day

BROOKLYN, New York----With a spot in the upcoming CUNYAC Championship Tournament on the line, the Brooklyn College softball team came through in the clutch in both games of a conference doubleheader against Lehman College on Thursday at Brooklyn College Field.  Following a Senior Day ceremony where Dasha Goodman, Zoey Van Vleet, and Grismarly Brito Mejia were recognized, BC would pull out a comeback victory, 7-5, in Game 1 before completing another comeback win in Game 2, 6-5.  Brooklyn improves to 11-13 overall and 4-4 in CUNYAC, extending their win-streak to six.  Lehman moves to 7-14-1 overall and 2-4 in CUNYAC.  Next Up: Brooklyn closes out the regular season in conference play against Baruch on Saturday, May 4, at Flowers Park (New Rochelle, NY) at 12pm.

Game 1

Brooklyn would trail early in the top of the first inning after an error and sacrifice groundout put Lehman up 2-0.

The Bulldogs looked to respond back right away, but just as they were on the verge of scoring their first run, Lightning leftfielder would throw a rocket to home plate to prevent that from happening.

After a quiet second inning and top of the third inning, Brooklyn would finally breakthrough in the bottom of the third, as third baseman Paige Palacios would once again get a hit to get on base through a single. Palacios went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and being walked once. It was the leftfielder, Jelisa Palenque, that would bring her home on the next turn at bat with an RBI-triple to make it 2-1, going a perfect 2-for-2 with 1 run,1 RBI and1stolen base.

Up until the top of the fifth, the score would remain the same but not before Lehman would score two more runs, including an inside the ballpark home run and a stolen base at home plate to make it 4-1.

With shortstop Melanie Millan at third for singling and advancing on a wild pitch and Palenque on second after stealing a base, centerfielder Dasha Goodman would bring them both home with an RBI-triple to deep left field to inch closer at 4-3.

The Lightning would attempt to break away with the lead in the top of sixth inning, as a fielder's choice would allow the runner on third to score and make it 5-3.

As all hope was starting to feel lost, catcher Vida Rodriguez would hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth inning and advance to second to inch them closer at 5-4.

Rodriguez would proceed to steal third base and score on the next play after the batter would reach first thanks to an error to tie the game at 5-5. She would end up hitting 1-for-3 with 1 stolen base, 1 RBI, 1 run

A pitching change would fill up the bases, and two wild pitches later, the Bulldogs had completed the rally to come back and win 7-5.

Game 2

Similar to the first game, Lehman would strike first with a two-run RBI-single to put them ahead 2-0.

Brooklyn would get on the board thanks to a sacrificed groundout, allowing Dasha Goodman to score and make it 2-1.

With the Lightning tacking on another run in the top of the third inning, the Bulldogs' shortstop Melanie Millan would hit a two-run RBI-triple to bring home the runners, including Paige Palacios, who stole second on a previous play. Millan went 2-for-3 with 2 runs, and 2 RBI to make it 3-3, before a sacrifice groundout would bring her home to make it 4-3.

Going into the bottom of the sixth, centerfielder Dasha Goodman would bring home Melanie Millan, who tripled on her last at bat, with an RBI-double to make it 5-3. She would end the game going 2-for-3 with 1 run, and 2 RBI.

A passed ball would set up for a wild pitch to put the game at 6-3. Despite a late rally in the top of the seventh, featuring an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly, the Lightning were unable come back in a 6-5 bal game.
