BC Men's Basketball Ends Season Fighting To The End In Semifinals Against Baruch

Bulldogs Come Up Short In Second Half Rally Against Bearcats

NEW YORK, NY ------ For the first time since the championship run in the 2019-2020 season, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team played in a CUNYAC Semifinal game against the number one seeded Baruch College Bearcats. Against the odds of being on the road in front of a packed ARC Arena and the conference standings, Brooklyn would put up a fight that would scare the Bearcats, especially in the second half, but coming up just short of pulling a spectacular upset, losing by a score of 62-60.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (13-14, 7-7 CUNYAC) end their season with their heads held high, as this is the furthest they had made it in five years, while the Baruch College Bearcats (16-10, 12-2 CUNYAC) move on to yet another CUNYAC Championship.

How It Happened

Brooklyn would get off to a solid start, showing no fear and taking an early 6-2 lead with 16:45 left in the half. However, Baruch would respond with a 12-0 run that would take until the 10:19 mark of the first half. Both teams would trade baskets throughout, but Baruch's small spurts of points helped them take a 30-20 lead into the half.

Looking to get back in the game, the Bulldogs' Malik Dale would set the tone with back-to-back three-point shots, catalyzing a run that would bring them closer by a score of 38-33 with 15:18 left in regulation.

Brooklyn would fight back with another run early on, but the most pivotal one would come when Brendan Armour would score six points in a row to narrow the score just 60-56 with 2:48 remaining. He would then bring them within three at the free-throw line, trailing just 61-58 with 1:49 remaining.

The Bearcats would score a crucial free-throw that would leave just 13 seconds on the clock, but Thrasybule would score a quick fastbreak layup to bring the Bulldogs within two with 0:05 remaining. Unfortunately that would be the last time ether side would score, ending the season with a 62-60 loss.

For the Bulldogs

  • Malik Dale led the way in two categories with 18 points and 4 assists.
  • Brendan Armour would be the only other Bulldog in double digits with 16 points, while also leading with 2 blocks on defense and 5 rebounds.
  • David McFadden would lead the way on the boards with 7 while also scoring 9 points, similar to Serge Thrasybule, who also had 9 points and 6 rebounds to go wth a Bulldog-leading 3 steals on defense.

The Brooklyn College men's basketball team may have lost the game in the end, but with a team that fought with that much heart, coming as far as they did and showing so much progress over the past few seasons, how could anybody not be impressed?
