Brunswick, ME----Meeting in similar circumstances five years later, the Brooklyn College women's basketball team took on No. 2 Bowdoin College on their homecourt in the NCAA Regional on Friday. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would once again fall to the Polar Bears, 66-42, closing out their year with a 17-12 mark as CUNYAC Champions for the fifth straight season. Bowdoin reamains undefeated with a 28-0 record and advances to the Second Round on Saturday once again at home against SUNY Cortand.
How It Happened
- Despite trailing, 44-16 at the half, the Bulldogs didn't roll over, outscoring the Polar Bears in the second half, 26-22. However, the first half deficit proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome.
- The Bulldogs' aggressive defensive schemes did give Bowdoin trouble all evening as they finished with a season-high 23 turnovers.
- Brooklyn's Dior Dorsey scored the first bucket of the contest and Alina Estrella knocked down a three to give the Bulldogs a 5-2 advantage early on. However, with the Bulldogs clinging to a 7-6 lead with 5:17 to go in the first quarter, the home team closed it out on a 21-0 run to reclaim the lead for good. Bowdoins lead wouldn't dip below 20 points for the remainder of the contest.
- The Polar Bears shot 47.1% from the field while Brooklyn struggled at times offensively, shooting 25.9%.
Quotable
- "Extremely proud of our team," second-year Head Coach, Megan Campell would comment after the game. "I thought we fought until the end and I really could ask for more."
- "One thing we talked about before the game was having grit no matter the circumstance," Estrella would reply on Brooklyn's stand in the second half. "It is something that all successful people have in common."
- "We came into the game with a plan to apply a lot of ball pressure," Dorsey would go on to say. "We definitely weren't happy about how we came out in the first half, so at halftime we talked about it and needed to show more fight in the second half regardless of the situation."
For the Bulldogs
- Dorsey paced all scorers with 16 points while coming up with 5 steals and grabbing 4 rebounds.
- Estrella added 12 points and also came up with 5 steals.
