BC Softball Comes Up Short Against Baruch On Day 2 of CUNYAC Championships

Bulldogs Let First Championship Appearance Slip Away Against Bearcats

BROOKLYN, New York ------ Making an appearance in the second day of the CUNYAC Softball Championships Tournament for the first time in a decade, the Brooklyn College softball team looked to continue their run for a chance at their first ever appearance in the championship final. Their first obstacle of the day would come in the form of the Baruch College Bearcats, who the Bulldogs had defeated during the regular season on Senior Day. Unfortunately, the game would go the distance once again, but the Bulldogs could not produce the same result, losing 6-5 to end their season.

The Brooklyn College Bulldogs (15-22) end this incredible season in heartbreaking fashion, but with more than a glimmer of hope, while the Baruch College Bearcats (13-22) head back to the championship to face the John Jay College Bloodhounds for the second time in three years.

How It Happened

After the Bearcats would get on the board quickly in the first inning off a triple to right center to make it 1-0, the Bulldogs would respond quickly in the same inning. Palacios would leadoff with a walk and then proceed to steal second base, putting herself into scoring position. Melanie Millan would waste no time as the second batter in the lineup, hitting a single to center field that would bring Palacios home for the tie 1-1.

Both teams would go scoreless for the next two inning before Baruch would break the tie in the top of the fourth, putting two more runs on the board to make it 3-1. Brooklyn would make a key defensive play to get out of the jam, as Rodriguez would launch a throw across to second base to prevent Baruch's runner from stealing a base.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs would respond accordingly once again. Lianna Gonzalez would hit a hard hit to left center field and Magny would pinch run her way to a stolen base, setting up the Bulldogs for a chance to put some points on the board. With the bases loaded, Zoey Van Vleet would hit the ball to center field, dropping it right onto the logo to hit a two-run RBI-single to tie the score once again at 3-3.

Brooklyn would finally jump in front in the bottom off the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs against them, Ashley Konner would step up when needed most, hitting a deep two-run RBI-single to right field to give Brooklyn their first lead of the day over Baruch 5-3.

The Bearcats would threaten to come back putting up another run in the top of the sixth to make it 5-4. Though the Bulldogs would manage to escape the inning with the lead still in tact heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Bearcats would retake the lead by putting up two runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it 6-5, a score that would stand as the Bulldogs would not be able to put together a magical comeback.

For the Bulldogs

  • Millan would hit a solid 2-for-4, scoring 1 run and 1 RBI to go with 3 put outs and 2 assists on defense.
  • Gonzalez would hit an identical 2-for-4, scoring 2 runs and putting out 3 batters and assisting on 1 on defense.
  • Konner's only hit was the go-ahead hit that bought in 2 RBIs to go with a Bulldogs-leading 5 put outs.
  • Van Vleet would have a similar situation, as her only hit would bring in 2 RBI to go with 2 put outs and 1 assist on defense.
Even though the season has ended for Brooklyn, the progress that has been made in the second year under Coach Frank Marinello is notable, going from a team that would constantly finish as a fourth seed at best to not only moving up to a third seed this year, but also making it to second day of the championship for the first time in ten years. They may need to keep waiting for the first appearance in a championship final and the victory may have been snatched from right under them, but what can not be snatched is the potential this team has for the eventual future.
