Brooklyn, NY — Brooklyn College Men's Tennis secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Purchase College (4-5) on Friday afternoon on the Roosevelt Courts, highlighted by a clutch performance from Dennis Shender at No. 3 singles. The win marks Brooklyn's third straight and improves their overall record to 6-3 on the season. Next Up: BC remains home tomorrow, April 11, for a non-conference match against St. Joseph's Long Island at 1pm.
With the match hanging in the balance, Shender delivered in dramatic fashion, outlasting Dexter Pretnar in a three-set battle, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, to clinch the deciding point for the Bulldogs.
Brooklyn gained early momentum by taking two of three doubles matches. The duo of Allen Mardakhayev and Shender earned a convincing 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while Dylan Augustin and Christopher Vasquez edged out a tight 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
In singles competition, James Walsh put together a strong performance at No. 4, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Augustin followed suit at No. 6 singles with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory, giving Brooklyn a 4-2 edge.
Purchase responded with wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 singles, setting up a decisive showdown at No. 3.
