Junior Yuliya Orkis has yet again had another spectacular start to the season, as Orkis has posted an 8-1 record in singles play during the month of September, including going 4-1 at the 2013 USTA/ITA Division III Northeast Regional Championships, which was held at Williams Smith College in Geneva, NY September 28th – 30th, eventually falling in the semifinals against the top overall seed, Ithaca College's Cristina Nunez, 6-3, 6-4. Orkis also went 3-0 at #1 doubles in the month, playing alongside partner sophomore Suraya Maenhout.
In the season opener on September 7th against Kean College, Orkis helped lead the team to a 9-0 win, as she picked up victories at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Debra Dress and #1 doubles, 8-2, over Dress and Jaelynn Lee, with her partner Maenhout.
Orkis would again earn wins at #1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Nora Landes and #1 doubles, 8-0, over Landes and Kayla Pincus with her partner Maenhout against Sarah Lawrence College on September 14th, to lead Brooklyn to a 7-2 victory.
Against conference rival Hunter College on September 25th, Orkis was once again dominant, winning at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 over Jane Selegean and #1 doubles, 8-4, over Selegean and Shena Joseph with partner Maenhout.
Coming against the City College of New York on September 18th, Orkis defeated Andriana Aivazians, 6-1, 6-0, at #1 singles, in her lone match.
At the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals, Orkis defeated Ramapo College’s Carly Agrifolio (6-1, 6-0), Skidmore College’s Robyn Baird (6-3, 6-1), NYU’s Ashley Masanto (6-1, 6-2) and SUNY Geneseo’s Mare Santos (6-1, 6-0) to advance to the semifinals.
Orkis was the #12 seed in the regionals.
A Theater major with a specialization in Acting, Orkis has also excelled in the classroom, as she boasts an incredible 3.983 GPA and is the reigning two-time CUNYAC Player of the Year.
For her efforts, Yuliya Orkis has been named the Brooklyn College Female Student-Athlete of the Month, for the month of September.
