After a slow start, the Women’s Tennis team has caught fire as of late, and much of the recent success can be attributed to Ruth Perez.

Playing in the #1 singles slot this season, Perez has tallied a 6-2 record, while going 3-1 in the CUNYAC.  Perez won her first singles contest of the season against Purchase College, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-2.  After dropping her next match, Perez bounced back with a five match winning streak, defeating her opponents with relative ease.  During the win streak, she lost a miniscule total of eleven games, while defeating foes from City Tech, Medgar Evers, College of New Rochelle and John Jay.  In one of Brooklyn College’s few team losses of late, Perez defeated her opponent from Kean University in straight sets, 6-4,
6-1.

In addition, while teaming with Olexandra Osviy (American / Dnepropetrousk, Ukraine) in the #1 doubles role, Perez has compiled a 6-1 mark, including going 3-0 in CUNYAC play.  After dropping their first contest of the season, Perez and Osviy have dominated, winning six matches in a row and dropping only four games to their opponents.

Adding to her accolades this season, Perez was awarded CUNYAC Player of the Week on September 29.  During that week, Perez notched a 4-0 singles record and 3-1 doubles mark, leading Brooklyn College to a 3-1 overall performance.  The team also went 2-0 in conference play.

“Ruth has been as consistent a player this month as anyone can possibly be,” said Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla.  “She matches up with the best player on the other team every match she plays and usually comes out on top.  Although we've had a few different lineups, she is always slotted #1, and her play this month has solidified that position for us.”

An even greater tribute to her athleticism, Perez is also a first-year member of the women’s cross country team and competed in the Queensborough Community College  6K race on September 20th, finishing the race in 36:44 which was good for 43rd place out of the 73 runners who completed the race.
