Junior guard Charnelle Saint Laurent had a strong month of February in helping the Brooklyn College Women’s Basketball team clinch the #1 overall seed in the 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Con Edison Women’s Basketball Championships.
During the month of February, which saw the Bulldogs post a 7-2 record, Saint Laurent played in all nine games, while making eight starts. She averaged 12.8 points, while shooting 36.7% (40-109) from the field and 29.2% (19-65) from three. She was also a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line during the month. Saint Laurent added 2.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game, while playing in 28.8 minutes per game.
BC finished the regular season with a 19-6 overall record, including an unblemished 11-0 in CUNYAC play. The Bulldogs entered the conference tournament as the #1 seed and went all the way to the championship game, where Brooklyn lost a hard fought battle to Baruch College.
Due to its stellar season, which saw the Bulldogs post its first 20-win season in program history, Brooklyn was selected to play in the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Women’s Basketball Tournament as the #4 seed, its fourth straight appearance in the eight-team tournament made up of teams from the New York/New Jersey area.
Coming in a 90-76 overtime loss to Richard Stockton College on February 4th, Saint Laurent had her highest scoring outing of the month pouring in 25 points.
She later had her second 20-point performance of the month in the Quarterfinals Round of the CUNYAC Championships on February 19th, as the junior from Dix Hills, NY netted 21 points in a 63-25 win over York College.
Saint Laurent continued her solid play in the CUNYAC Championships, leading the Bulldogs to a 64-58 victory over Lehman College in the Semifinals on February 22nd, with 12 points. She would score 12 points again on February 25th, as Brooklyn was unable to end Baruch’s reign as CUNYAC Champions, as the Bearcats took home its fifth straight conference championship.
For her efforts, Saint Laurent was named to the 2012 CUNYAC All-Tournament team.
Coming in Brooklyn’s First Round matchup of the 2012 ECAC Metro Tournament on February 29th, Saint Laurent hit arguably her biggest shot of the season, the eventual game-winning three-pointer, to lift BC to a 52-51 win over Old Westbury, to put the Bulldogs in the Semifinals Round.
For her efforts during the month of February 2012, Saint Laurent has been named the Brooklyn College Female Student-Athlete of the Month.
